Should Believers SwearShould Believers Swear? (cuss)

I was watching a friends timeline yesterday when all of a sudden a post showed up with a meme that had a blatant, what I would consider swear word in it!

Now I do not think this person considers themselves a teacher but being that I would say 95% of all that they post online is Scripturally based and that by virtue of being a Believer you are a teacher already (as you learn you are to teach others) I would consider her to be one.

I believe there are some Scripture that we need to look at on this topic and I will start at the beginning!

1) Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

When we post “funny” memes like that are we conforming to the world? Are we, as Believers not been taught to separate from the world and come out from among them? Are we not to renew our minds? Are OLD things not to pass away and all things become new?

For many their old lifestyle was filled with curse words and they strive to change their lives so are we not putting a stumbling block before our brother or sister who are trying to change.

2) Luke 6:45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. (or types or shares)

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

We have to be careful what we say and do as Ambassadors of the Kingdom. We are supposed to be different whether at home, at work or online!

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

We should be thinking about positive things and posting positive things. I will be honest that this took me a long time to understand. There was a time where I would post every detail of every problem I had with someone online then one day God and I had a chat. I realized that my posts on Facebook and elsewhere should be positive and edifying and I barely post anymore. (minus my political rants)

4) James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, since you know that we will be judged more severely.

James 3:5-6 So too the tongue is a tiny part of the body, yet it boasts great things. See how a little fire sets a whole forest ablaze! 6 Yes, the tongue is a fire, a world of wickedness. The tongue is so placed in our body that it defiles every part of it, setting ablaze the whole of our life

We have to be careful what we say to everyone and how we say it.

While no where in Scripture does it say cussing aint allowed and the word that was used has several definitions but the context was denegrating a segment of society and that is not ok. Scripture does tell us to be a light to the world and to be salt…..

I know the meme was meant to be funny but we have to be careful not to fall into the trap of wanting to be popular online at the risk of losing our testimony and our integrity.

In the 60’s to the  90’s if I would have used this word my mouth would have been washed out with soap. Today words that we would never have used in the past probably because of music, television and movies have become common place in our world. We are not to be like our world but rise above to a higher standard.

The word Raca is original to the Greek manuscript; however, it is not a Greek word. The most common view is that it is a reference to the Aramaic word reka, which literally means “empty one”, but probably meant “empty headed,” or “foolish.”

Yet, I find that many who believe in different religions and theologies who read the Hebrew Scriptures say many things are sins, even if it is NOT in Hebrew Scriptures. And many words are revolting to them. It has been almost 2,000 years since our foretold Hebrew Messiah/Christ/Kristos walked the earth and quoted to His disciples/emissaries what the Father in heaven tells Him to say. This is just an example how important words are……………Matthew 5:22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

I have learned I do not need to cuss as others do. It just is not necessary at all.
