Be Careful What You Let Into Your Heart and Mind
The Eyes Are the Window to the Soul
Jesus said something very important about guarding our hearts and minds. He said: “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness.” (Matthew 6:22-23)Our eyes are like windows that let things into our hearts and minds. If we look at good, pure things, it fills us with light. But if we look at bad, sinful things, it fills us with darkness. We have to be so careful about what we allow our eyes to see!
Guard Your Heart Above All Else
The Bible tells us in Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. “Guarding our heart is the most important thing. Why? Because our heart is where our thoughts, feelings, and actions come from. If our heart is filled with good things, good will come out in our life. But if it’s filled with bad things, bad will come out.
Be Careful Little Eyes What You See
There’s a classic children’s song that gives great advice: “O be careful little eyes what you see, O be careful little ears what you hear…”We need to be so careful about what we watch, read, and listen to. Stuff that seems fun or harmless can actually damage our hearts and minds. Things like:
- Bad language or inappropriate jokes
- Movies/shows with lots of violence or sexual content
- Music with lyrics about drugs, sex, etc.
- Video games that glorify violence or evil
All of those can pollute our hearts and minds if we’re not careful!
Let in the Light
Instead, we should fill our eyes, ears, and minds with good, pure things that honor God. The Bible says: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)When we read God’s Word, listen to uplifting music, and watch shows that are wholesome and encouraging, it fills our hearts and minds with light. Then we can shine God’s light to the world around us! It’s not always easy, but guarding what goes into our hearts and minds is so important. Let’s commit to being careful about what we allow our eyes to see and our ears to hear. When we do, we honor God and allow His light to shine through us.
