Because we need to talk about what the Bible actually means when it calls someone a “fool”—and why that word doesn’t mean what you think it means.

The Great Intellectual Hoax

Go to any university campus, turn on any late-night TV panel, or open up any mainstream commentary piece, and you’ll hear the same tired narrative repeated like a mantra:

“Faith is for the ignorant. Religion is for the weak. Atheism is the posture of the enlightened, logical, modern thinker.”

It’s brilliant positioning, isn’t it?

If you want to sell a narrative, you wrap it in the banner of superior intellect. You make the target audience feel like they’re joining an elite, exclusive club of top-tier thinkers. You sell them the illusion of wisdom.

Dan Kennedy used to talk about the concept of the “Sophisticated Lie”—a claim designed specifically to appeal to a person’s ego so they feel superior just by agreeing with it.

Atheism is the ultimate Sophisticated Lie.

It tells you: “You don’t need a Higher Power. You don’t have to answer to a Creator. You are the master of your universe, the ultimate authority, the smartest guy in the room.”

It stroke’s your vanity. It strokes your intellect.

And it leads you straight off a cliff.

What the Ancient Text Actually Says

Look at the book of Psalms. Chapter 53, verse 1. It’s short, punchy, and utterly uncompromising:

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.”

Now, when modern readers see that word—fool—they assume it’s just a cheap insult. They think David was just throwing schoolyard name-calling around because someone disagreed with him.

“Oh, look, the religious guy is calling the skeptic stupid!”

Wrong. Dead wrong.

To understand what’s happening here, you have to look at the linguistic root of how ancient writers understood mental breakdown, arrogance, and moral blindness.

Take a look at the Greek term παραφρονέω (paraphroneō).

Break it down phonetically: par-af-ron-eh’-o.

What does it literally mean?

When the Scriptures declare that an atheist is a fool, it isn’t making a comment on their IQ score. It isn’t saying they can’t do advanced calculus, win a Nobel Prize in chemistry, or build a multi-million dollar corporation.

It is stating a cold, hard, diagnostic fact: They are acting outside of reality.

They are living in a state of self-induced spiritual psychosis. They have deliberately severed their intellect from the glaring, obvious facts of the universe right in front of their faces.

The Ultimate “Free Lunch” Fantasy

In business, whenever someone offers you something for nothing, you hold onto your wallet. You know intuitively that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Everything has a cost. Every system has a creator. Every design has a designer.

If I walked up to you on the street, pulled out a Swiss mechanical watch—intricate, self-winding, keeping perfect time to the millisecond—and told you, “Nobody made this. A million years ago, an explosion happened in a metal factory, and this watch accidentally assembled itself,” what would you do?

You’d laugh in my face. You’d think I was out of my mind.

You would correctly diagnose me as paraphroneō—completely out of my senses.

Yet, when an atheist looks at:

  1. The Human Genome: A digital, error-correcting, three-billion-letter code packed inside every single cell of your body.

  2. Fine-Tuned Physics: Gravitational constants, electromagnetic forces, and expansion rates adjusted to a precision of 1 part in $10^{120}$—a precision so fine that moving a dial by a hair’s breadth destroys all life in the cosmos.

  3. Objective Moral Law: The universal human realization that murder, betrayal, and cruelty are genuinely, objectively evil—not just personal preferences.

…what do they say?

They look at that infinite complexity, that precision engineering, that moral framework, and they say: “Yep. Total accident. Nobody built it. It came from nothing, for no reason, going nowhere.”

That isn’t scientific rigor.

That is intellectual bankruptcy.

Why Do They Say It “In Their Heart”?

Notice the exact wording in Psalm 53:1. It doesn’t say, “The fool hath proven in his mind…”

It says: “The fool hath said IN HIS HEART…”

This is the most critical insight in the entire text.

Atheism is rarely an intellectual problem. It is almost always a heart problem.

It is an issue of the will.

Think about the incentives. Why would someone desperately want there to be no God?

When a person says “There is no God,” they aren’t making a logical deduction based on scientific evidence. They are making a moral declaration. They are declaring independence from their Creator because they want to run the show.

Stop letting the culture intimidate you with pseudo-intellectual posturing.

The evidence is clear. The cosmic ledger is balanced. The truth stands firm whether people choose to accept it or not.

Don’t buy the Sophisticated Lie.
